THE KENILWORTH PROGRAM

Addiction is a disease

Addictive behaviour is not a conscious choice. Quitting alcohol or drugs is only the beginning of the recovery process. Changes in attitude, lifestyle and understanding are also necessary to ensure that recovery is sustainable.

Treatment

You won't be alone

On arrival, each patient is assessed by the nursing staff and made to feel comfortable, and is then assigned a counsellor. The counsellor will, in continued consultation with the treatment team, supervise a therapeutic programme of recovery. This will include personal counselling, educational lectures, group therapy and written work.

Family members are an integral part of this process, providing information, attending a family session, or joining the family programme held on Saturday mornings.

During their stay, patients are introduced to philosophies and the practices of the 12-step self-help groups of Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

We strongly advise that patients continue their involvement with 12-step recovery programmes after discharge.

Detoxification

Helping you to help yourself

The approach of total abstinence from all mood-altering substances also takes in the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of each patient's life. Dependency is an illness and the recovery process is ultimately the responsibility of the patient. Our task is to provide the help necessary to effect this change. The process of detoxification is medically monitored by trained and empathetic nursing staff.

Sitting

Daily Programme

Going all the way

The duration of primary treatment is usually
3 weeks. However, many patients agree to a
4th week as a day patient as a re-entry
transition phase. This makes it easier for the
patient to integrate back into a conventional
and clean life.

Follow-up & Aftercare

Vital to the recovery process

This is already included in the costs of the
treatment programme. The optimum treatment
period is 90 days, however, we expect patients
to attend follow-up and aftercare to complete
this process. This takes the form of a weekly
lecture followed by group sessions, held every Tuesday evening. We have recently developed specialised aftercare groups to meet the particular needs of specific patients.

Staff Info

We understand where you are

The multi-disciplined team at Kenilworth Place are dedicated and highly experienced. Medical personnel, counsellors and a psychologist all work closely together to help each patient recover. Consultant psychiatrists are also available.

The treatment team includes para-professional people who have experienced alcoholism or addiction themselves and have many years of abstinence in recovery.

Cost Schedule

Kenilworth place is a private sector initiative, and all fees are billed at medical aid rates. Many medical aids will finance a treatment programme, either fully or partially, and members of medical schemes should enquire about this option.
